Steve Case, the billionaire founder of Aol, once said:
"You shouldn't focus on why you can't do something, which is what most people do. You should focus on why perhaps you can, and be one of the exceptions."
I recently interviewed a woman who has dedicated her life to helping other women become one of the "exceptions".
Carrie Green is the founder of the Female Entrepreneur Association and the author of the new book, She Means Business: Turn Your Ideas into Reality and Become a Wildly Successful Entrepreneur.
Carrie has interviewed thousands of women to find out why they made the leap into the entrepreneurial world and how they turned their ideas into actual businesses. She has compiled a list of the most common themes below.
Sign #1: You're always daydreaming about being your own boss...
You don't just think about leaving your job "once in awhile" -- you can think of little else! If your desire to leave were a skin condition, you'd need prescription cream. In other words, you feel impatient over the small stuff that never used to bother you, and are having trouble focusing on the task at hand.
You find yourself not worrying about next year or even next quarter, because in your mind, you're not sure you'll still be there. While you might be "present" at your job physically, mentally you're not there anymore.
If this is you, it's a massive sign that it's time to make your reality catch up with what you truly want in your heart.
Sign #2: Despite the doubts and worries, you know deep down you've got what it takes...
If other people can, you can too, right?
It's completely normal to have doubts and worries when you're teetering on the edge of chasing your dreams and doing something new, but if you look around at other people building their dream businesses and think, "If they can do it, so can I" -- then you're more than ready to take the leap and join them.
You've got this, don't let the doubts and worries hold you back.
Sign #3: You may not have everything figured out, but anything is better than this...
If you've reached the point where you're just so over your job and you feel like anything else would be better, then it's definitely time to follow your dreams!
Steve Jobs once said,
"I've looked in the mirror every day and asked myself, 'If today were the last day of my life would I want to do what I'm about to do today?' and whenever the answer has been "no" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something."
Life is to be lived to the full, so if you're feeling unhappy in your job it's a big sign that you need to change something.
Sign #4: You've already started to connect with new people who can support you...
If you've already started to reach out to people who can help you with your business or you've begun connecting with like-minded entrepreneurs who can support you along your journey, then it's time to go for it!
Sign #5: You're obsessed with learning about how you can make "the leap"...
If you're no longer just dreaming of building your business and you've actually started to immerse yourself in learning about how you can make it a reality -- then you're serious about making it happen.
You've read the books, you've joined relevant groups on Facebook, you've started listening to business podcasts or maybe watching entrepreneurial videos on YouTube, so now you're ready to put everything you've learned into action and start turning your idea into a wildly successful business.
Sign #6: You know that everything you're doing for your job... you could be doing for your own business!
If you're working away every day for someone else with the thought that you could be doing the same work for your own business (and probably earning a hell of a lot more!) then it's time to become your own boss!
Sign #7: You want to spend every spare minute you get working on your business ideas...
You're so excited about your business ideas you literally spend every spare minute you get working on them. You stay up way too late, you want to tell everyone about your ideas, you think about it all the time, you're ridiculously excited about the possibilities of what could become of your ideas.
If so, it's a big indication that you're already an entrepreneur in the making!
How many of these things do you relate to? Maybe it's time to give yourself permission to follow your heart and become your own boss.
If you do decide to take the leap, know with conviction that you can create so much success. It might not always be an easy journey, but if you hang on, continue learning and keep taking action the path will unfold and... it will be such an exciting adventure.
You've got this!
