If you're feeling a little off this morning, you're not alone. Daylight saving time is in full swing today, despite evidence it leads to productivity loss, bad health, and even death. And you thought losing a little sleep wasn't so bad.

The good news, as sleep expert Matthew Walker notes, is that your body adjusts about one hour per day. Experts say you'll be fine within a few days.

As an entrepreneur, though, you want to salvage every minute of precious sleep you can. And there are steps you can take today to make daylight saving time, an unexpected all nighter, or jet lag easier to bear.

Go for the protein

According to the Mayo Clinic, what you eat could impact your time adjustment. For food, it suggests focusing on high-protein meals or snacks (think nuts and avocados) when you want to stay up longer, and step up the carbs (like bread and pastas) if you need to settle down earlier. Anecdotally, I know many hardcore travelers who skip the alcohol and load up on healthy fruits and snacks when jet-setting.

Stick to a routine. Consistency matters

On day one, fall back into your normal routine. Do you have breakfast at 7 a.m., and a cup of coffee by 8 a.m.? Do the same thing today. It's worth emphasizing that your body may not want to do this: It will feel like you are eating at 6 a.m., and having coffee by 7 a.m. But push through the discomfort. The sooner you get back into lockstep, the faster you will transition into the new time.

Science says consistency is just as important at night. Being in bed and ready for sleep at 10 p.m. every evening sets you up for a deeper sleep. Why? Your body has acclimated to the routine, so it's already getting primed to rest well before you set foot in the bedroom. Again, you may not feel right being in bed an hour before your usual time, but the sooner you adjust to the new time, the smoother your transition to deeper sleep will be.
