Last year, I was brought in to serve The Nursing Beat, a fledgling media startup, as an Executive Chairman of the Board. It’s been a roller coaster ride, but mostly ups – and I’ve discovered that the role of an Executive Chairman can be instrumental in catapulting a fledgling startup from the realm of potential into the world of impact. I was recently asked to share with another CEO about the benefits of having a new Chairperson come in to join the Board as a leader – and I thought in addition to sharing privately, I’d share with you all! Let’s dive into how an Executive Chairman or Chairwoman can make an impact:

1. Providing Strategic Direction:

As an Executive Chairman, one of your main roles is to provide strategic direction. Startups are exciting, and dynamic, but can also be chaotic. The trick is to focus on the bigger picture and keep your finger on the pulse of the industry. Keep an eye out for disruptive trends and seek opportunities to leverage them. Remember, it’s not just about surviving in the market; it’s about leading it.

2. Offering Mentorship:

When a startup is in its early stages, the founding team often consists of passionate and talented individuals, but they might not have experienced the challenges of running a business before. That’s where an Executive Chairman steps in. With a wealth of experience in your corner, you can mentor these entrepreneurs, helping them avoid common pitfalls and teaching them how to make informed decisions. You are their Yoda, guiding them on their entrepreneurial journey.

3. Building a Robust Network:

Your network can be one of the most valuable resources for a startup. It’s not just about who you know; it’s about who they know. As an Executive Chairman, you’ve likely built a network that spans industries and borders. By leveraging these connections, you can open doors for the startup that would have been otherwise closed, whether that’s securing funding, finding the right talent, or landing crucial partnerships.

4. Ensuring Good Governance:

Governance might seem like a dry topic, but it’s crucial for the long-term success of any startup. As an Executive Chairman, you can help implement good governance practices. This includes making sure the startup is compliant with all relevant laws and regulations, but it goes beyond just ticking boxes. Good governance also means establishing a culture of transparency, accountability, and ethical decision-making.

5. Driving the Culture:

A startup’s culture is its lifeblood. It can make or break a company. As an Executive Chairman, you have the power to shape and nurture this culture. It’s about fostering an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and motivated to give their best. This can include everything from establishing the company’s values and mission to setting up employee recognition programs or supporting work-life balance initiatives.

Each startup is unique, with its own set of challenges and opportunities, but with the right guidance, a clear vision, and a powerful network, the sky’s the limit!

Remember, as an Executive Chairman, your role is not to run the day-to-day operations. Your role is to guide, mentor, and support, helping the startup navigate the rocky seas of entrepreneurship and chart a course toward success. Leadership is not about being in charge. It’s about taking care of those in your charge. That’s the real secret to success as an Executive Chairman.
