Back in 2015, Inc. shared "10 Ways to Let Your Team Know You Love Them," highlighting actions any leader can implement in order to create a positive team environment. The author lists a number of practical tips that, when applied deliberately and consistently, demonstrate genuine care for individuals and for the team as a whole. Taking responsibility and holding ourselves accountable as leaders, being transparent, and empowering people can create a feeling that we are all in this together. Providing regular positive feedback and letting individuals express their feelings helps people feel special in ways that are important to them as individuals.

At Disney Institute, we believe that demonstrating genuine care is a key component of employee engagement. Best of all, you can provide great care without spending much money.

In fact, great leadership behaviors are free. For example:

  • Look for opportunities to catch employees doing it right, and say, "Thank you." Your investment in taking the time to stop by and thank the person speaks volumes to people and doesn't really cost anything.
  • Demonstrate intentional listening. Listening costs nothing, but offers a unique opportunity to truly hear your employees and take action based upon what you heard. Or, don't take action, and tell people why. Active listening goes a long way toward creating an environment of mutual trust and respect.
  • Regularly share positive customer impact stories, recognizing the specific contributions of individuals and teams. This positive reinforcement also helps to set the vision for what future employee-customer interactions should look and feel like.

Employee engagement isn't created overnight. In fact, as we examined earlier in Four Ways to Consistently Demonstrate Genuine Care, great leaders make genuine care a regular, daily priority.

Ultimately, "showing the love" is one of the best investments we can make as a leader, paying dividends now and well into the future. To learn more, consider enrolling in our Disney's Approach to Employee Engagement professional development training course.
