The last time Scott faced an economic collapse, during the 2009 recession, she made a change that would vault her business from boutique brand to billion-dollar behemoth. That move--a counterintuitive pivot at the time from wholesaling to owning her own stores--gave her a platform to build an ever-stronger relationship with her customers.
The last time around, she reinvented the jewelry-shopping experience. "I hated going into jewelry stores," she says. "I wanted customers to engage with the product and have fun, to touch and feel the pieces and try them on, like how we shop for clothes." The stores she created became, in turn, gathering places where shoppers would sip champagne and hang out.
Today, with the Covid-19 crisis keeping shoppers away from stores and away from social occasions that require breaking out the jewelry, Scott has had to rethink how she engages her tribe of followers once again.
