Here are some alarming (but also surprising) facts about the modern workplace. As you read, you'll immediately understand why these facts are alarming. After the list, I'll explain why they're surprising and what you can do about them.

  1. The most common use of telecommutting is for workers to continue working at home after putting in a full day at the office.
  2. Workers in America now work on average 164 hours longer a year now than they did twenty years ago.
  3. Managers and organizations repeatedly pressure workers into working many hours of unpaid overtime.
  4. Many corporations have become increasingly intrusive into their employee's work habits and personal lives.
  5. There's been a sharp increase in work-related headaches, muscle fatigue, blurred vision, repetitive stress injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, and low back pain.
  6. Up to 60 percent of electronics workers have mental health issues. Some companies are even considering on-site psychotherapy facilities.
  7. Over the past 20 years, there's been a steady increase in worker's compensation as the result of stress-related health issues.

So what's the big surprise? The above facts come from research reports written more than 20 years ago. (The most recent is from 1993.)

There two lessons here, I think. First, since people have been complaining about workplace stress for decades, so it's pretty pointless to complain about it now.
