Just to make things personally clear, I like Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. I especially like that when he grows out his hipster beard it makes him look exactly like a garden gnome. (Especially when he wears a hipster knit hat.)

Now, I confess I'm not entirely certain why hipsters like Dorsey WANT to look like garden gnomes, but if there's one thing I know about life, it's that if you want to be successful, you've got to COMMIT, even if it's to looking like a lawn ornament.

All that aside, though, I can't say I'm a big fan of Dorsey's recent "how to have a productive meeting" tweet, especially in the wake of much better advice from Elon Musk. Here's Dorsey's tweet:

I think I know what he's getting at. It's more effective to have everybody to read a Google Doc at the beginning of a meeting than to have everyone sit through a PowerPoint (or two or more). Yes to that, and Hallelujah!

However, it apparently hasn't occurred to Dorsey that it would be far, far, far more productive if the meeting leader distributed the document ahead of time, so that everyone can read and comment on it BEFORE the meeting even starts.

That way, most, if not all, of the issues might be resolved, thereby shortening the meeting or eliminating the need for it altogether. What's more, would-be attendees could do the reading when convenient to them rather than when captive in a conference room.

Look, business people aren't (or shouldn't be) grade school children who need a My Pet Goat group reading session. "OK, kids! Ten minutes of quiet time while we read the assignment! Raise your hand if you don't understand a big word."

Seriously, professionals who are incapable of mustering 10 minutes beforehand to prep for a meeting should be fired, even if they're fully committed to this garden gnome thing.
