Demand for technical skills like big data analysis and coding is exploding, driven by rapid advances in AI and the need to make sense of the vast quantities of data generated today.
But for job-seekers that lack these heavily technical skills, don't despair: Jobs that rely on "soft" people skills like communication, empathy, and interpersonal finesse are also witnessing explosive growth, according to new research by LinkedIn.
After crunching the data on a subset of their 530 million members, researchers at LinkedIn generated a list of the 20 fastest-growing emerging jobs by measuring the rate of growth in the number of members who listed certain job titles on their LinkedIn profiles from 2012 to 2017.
"Machine Learning Engineer" and "Data Scientist" topped the list, with demand for these roles growing 9.8 times and 6.5 times, respectively, over this five-year period.
These two technical roles were followed by two vastly different types of jobs requiring people-focused skills: "Sales Development Representative" and "Customer Success Manager", which grew by 5.7 times and 5.6 times, respectively.
In fact, of the entire list of 20 emerging jobs, 12 rely heavily on softer, customer-focused skills like "Guest Experience Associate." The other eight jobs are those requiring highly technical skill-sets, like "Full Stack Developer."
Regardless of the type of job --whether it requires hard technical skills or softer, customer-facing skills--soft skills are important to being a good fit for any role. A survey of 1,600 hiring managers conducted last year by LinkedIn highlighted the six essential soft skills they screen for when evaluating candidates: adaptability; culture fit; collaboration; leadership; growth potential; and prioritization.
"It's a good reminder that soft skills will always be important, no matter the profession. The ability to collaborate, be a leader, and learn from colleagues will stand out in interviews, and even more once starting a job," says LinkedIn.
