We probably should have seen Elon Musk's next big idea coming a mile away.

Given Musk's interest in developing electric vehicles and futuristic aircraft, it's only fitting that his next innovative concept would be ... an electric-powered airplane. During a Q&A last week at the Hyperloop pod design competition at Texas A&M University, Musk was asked what his "next great idea" was, BGR.com reports.

"I've been thinking about the vertical takeoff and landing [of an] electric jet a bit more, and I think I have something that might close," he said. "I'm quite tempted to do something about it."

Though Musk first  mentioned the concept during an interview with Marketplace in October, saying a supersonic electric jet would be doable and "pretty cool," his comments at Texas A&M represent the first hint he might pursue the project.

Not all of Musk's innovative ideas sound far-fetched and futuristic, however. After mentioning the electric jet concept, Musk shared an idea he called "simple and obvious," but one that he wished people would execute: building more tunnels.

"It's just a hole in the ground--it's not that hard--but if you have tunnels in cities, you would massively alleviate congestion," he said. "You could probably have 30 layers of tunnels and completely fix the congestion problem in high-density cities, so I strongly recommend tunnels."
