Want your company's Instagram account to look more legit? Instagram has a new application to verify your identity and receive the coveted blue checkmark, the company announced in a blog post published Tuesday.

The new verification process is part of a three-part security rollout that also introduces two-factor authentication and requires additional public information about accounts, such as country of origin, when it was created, and which ads it runs. Instagram co-founder and chief technology officer Mike Krieger wrote that the tools will help make Instagram safer and stop "bad actors before they cause harm."

Instagram's verification icon appears next to your Instagram handle and lets users know the company has confirmed that your account is authentic. Instagram will only verify accounts of notable public figures, celebrities, global brands, and entities that reach large audiences and follow Instagram's community guidelines and terms of services. The company did not specify how many followers constitute a large following, saying only that accounts should be "notable," meaning they represent highly searched entities and are featured in multiple news sources.

Private Instagram accounts are not eligible to apply for the verified badge. Accounts must be registered to a real person, or a registered business or entity, and must include a bio, profile photo, and at least one post. If your account contains "add me" links to other social media services, your request may be denied.

To apply, go to the menu option on your Instagram profile page, select "Settings," and hit the "Request Verification" button. The form will prompt you to enter your full name and upload a copy of your legal or business identification. Instagram says the information will not be shared publicly. Accounts that are denied the verification badge are free to re-apply after 30 days.
