Adapting to change is one of the foundations of American business. It’s an uncertain time, and it’s easy to feel lost when thinking about the future. Whether you are concerned about your company’s growth or direction, or just want to get a different perspective on your business development, you can learn a lot by observing the world around you. Taking a quick mental break from your business can give you a leg up because you will come up with ideas for adapting your business as you reflect. When you focus on adapting and leading instead of reacting, you’ll set yourself up for long-term success.

Digital tools and apps we use on a regular basis are a great place to start. Chances are you have a handful of tech tools you use every day. They offer lessons that everyone can apply, as long as you ask the right questions. Here are some of my favorite questions to get inspiration from the tech you use every day:

What is tech?

When you think about tech, you probably think computers, software, or the internet. You should realize that “tech” is any tool you use to accomplish a goal, including techniques and strategies. When done right, tech is an elegant and simple solution to a problem. You can better recognize tech by considering what problem it solves. Industry leaders like Google and Amazon have exploded because they found the right problem to solve. What tech does your business offer? Even companies which are not tech-oriented offer solutions, so it’s just a matter of perspective. When you think about your business in this way, it’s easier to understand what your company’s goal should be.

What tech do you use every day?

We learn best when we have a working knowledge to build from. When you’re looking for direction, consider tech you are familiar with. Don’t think about your favorite piece of tech-instead look for the tech you engage with the most. Chances are you’ll be surprised once you figure it out because it feels like second nature to use. A phone is obviously tech, but the calendar you use within it is a better case to study. Your favorite streaming service has a large infrastructure of business partnerships, but the search and layout need to be designed right or you’ll hate using it. When you identify the tech which is the most useful in your life, you can move on to the toughest question to consider.

How can I achieve greatness like they have?

No matter the industry, it is impossible to luck your way into being a great business. The companies which best adjust to trends and offer the superior product or experience rise to the top. So, you need to have an honest assessment of your business to know where to start. What is the problem you solve? Why makes you better than the competition? What is your business’s main goal? There’s a reason why successful companies have clear mission statements: when you know what your focus and goal should be, you can better adapt to your market. But you cannot adapt if you do not know what your market actually is. Some entrepreneurs and business owners get tripped up by trying to do as many things as possible. There’s a reason the most successful companies specialize in a particular piece of tech. For your business, simplicity is key.

Asking yourself the questions above will not magically make your business more adaptable. It’s important to realize that adaptation is a mindset that needs to be trained. Growing a business is time consuming, and it’s easy to get lost in the day-to-day problems which arise. Using this strategy of learning from the tech around you will help you make the transition from being a reactive business to an adaptable business.
