If there's one thing the CEOs on the Inc. 500--an annual ranking of the fastest-growing private U.S. companies--know, it's leadership. So when examining our annual survey, it came as no surprise that 71 percent of them feel they're effective at building a leadership pipeline, or that 63 percent pour significant resources into grooming new leaders. The latter represents more of a challenge nowadays since 50 percent have trouble attracting and retaining skilled employees (and 20 percent have trouble just staying focused). That said, finding true leadership potential remains paramount to small business owners, and 77 percent of the CEOs said it's how they they screen external candidates.
