Some people say that New Year’s resolutions are a waste of time. Others believe they are the only way to create serious positive change in lifestyle. What really matters is your commitment to improving your life and being ready to take action.
Each year I meet with hundreds of successful people and I find that while their resolutions differ a bit in specifics, they all tend to focus on making sure these 3 areas are covered. I myself set specific goals every year in these 3 categories.
1. Focus on Healthy Living
Waking up feeling crappy will make you unproductive and unmotivated. You don’t have to lose 50 pounds in one year, but you do want to be healthy enough where you can focus on other things besides pains and ailments. Start small. Choose one simple change in your eating or exercise habits that will improve how you feel. Decide to finally get that annual physical so you can either deal with issues or put the hypochondriatic thoughts out of your mind.
2. Get Your Financial House in Order
It is true that money does not by happiness, but lack of money can certainly prevent living a joyful life. This is the time to self-evaluate your career, spending habits, and material needs. Pick one credit card to pay off. Get training so you can be promoted. Write the business plan for the company you have been dying to start. Focus on making one significant change that will make you breathe a bit easier each morning.
3. Make Your Home Life Awesome!
Happiness starts with a solid foundation. If you are living in a struggling relationship and aren’t respected at home, you will struggle with building success outside. It’s time to have the hard conversations you have been avoiding. It might even be time to call it quits and move on. Just act. Maybe starting open communication will show you that the love and support you have been looking for has been there all along.
