To me, America's Pastime will always be baseball. In my California days, I was a season ticket holder for the San Francisco Giants. Now that I'm in New York, I've discovered the Staten Island Yankees are the best baseball deal in town. Baseball is a fantastic summer tradition that I always look forward to.

I've written before about my love for baseball and the lessons it offers for business. This week, Washington, D.C., will host the All Star Game at beautiful National's Park. There's a lot to learn from these players. Their hard work and dedication are remarkable, and particularly difficult to sustain when they're on a terrible team. Baseball, like business, is about hard work, perseverance, passion, and the team. If any one of those is missing, success will be difficult to achieve.

These quotes are equally applicable to baseball and business. They'll help you learn how to win the Home Run Derby in your industry:

1. "If you could equate the amount of time and effort put in mentally and physically into succeeding on the baseball field and measured it by the dirt on your uniform, mine would have been black." -- Mike Schmidt

2. "Baseball is a game based on adversity. It's a game that's going to test you repeatedly. It's going to find your weaknesses and vulnerabilities and force you to adjust. That adversity, in the big picture, is a really good thing because it shows you where your weaknesses are. It gives you the opportunity to improve." -- Theo Epstein

3. "That's the beautiful thing about baseball. You can be any size and be successful." -- Andrew Benintendi

4. "The more you play baseball, the less depends on your athletic ability. It's a mental war more than anything." -- Alex Rodriguez

5. "The older pitcher acquires confidence in his ballclub. He doesn't try to do it all himself." -- Burleigh Arland Grimes

6. "Baseball is not a sport you can achieve individually." -- Curt Schilling

7. "You need to have camaraderie in the clubhouse. Wherever you're working, be it a baseball team or at a business, you want to walk in there and say, 'Geez, it's great to be at work. Let's go get 'em,' as opposed to walking in there knowing there's going to be a commotion." -- Pat Gillick

8. "No baseball pitcher would be worth a darn without a catcher who could handle the hot fastball." -- Casey Stengel

9. "There's different kinds of laughs. It's like a baseball lineup: this guy's your power hitter, this guy gets on base, this guy works out walks. If everybody does their job, we're gonna win." -- Jerry Seinfeld

10. "There are three types of baseball players: Those who make it happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happens." -- Tommy Lasorda

11. "What life throws at you - you just have to learn how to hit it, which is a baseball metaphor. The ball's outside, you hit to the right. You don't let them go by." -- Billy Crystal

12. "You can't be afraid to make errors! You can't be afraid to be naked before the crowd, because no one can ever master the game of baseball, or conquer it. You can only challenge it." -- Lou Brock

13. "Baseball gives every American boy a chance to excel, not just to be as good as someone else but to be better than someone else. This is the nature of man and the name of the game." -- Ted Williams

14. "Just because you're down to your last strike, you're not out yet. You can always do more. You'll always have more at-bats to take. That's true in baseball, in rescuing animals, and in life, generally." -- Tony La Russa

15. "You can have the best team in baseball, and if nobody goes through the turnstiles, you've got to shut the doors down." -- Tommy Lasorda

16. "Just as the common law derives from ancient precedents - judges' decisions - rather than statutes, baseball's codes are the game's distilled mores. Their unchanged purpose is to show respect for opponents and the game. In baseball, as in the remainder of life, the most important rules are unwritten. But not unenforced." -- George Will

17. "Catching a fly ball is a pleasure, but knowing what to do with it after you catch it is a business." -- Tommy Henrich

18. "Luck is the residue of design." -- Branch Rickey

19. "You just make the right baseball decision. You don't necessarily worry about somebody's feelings or anything like that. You make the right baseball decision for the team first and then for the player's development as importantly." -- Theo Epstein

20. "Building a baseball team is like building a house. You look for the best architects, the best builders - and then you let them do their jobs." -- Pat Gillick

21. "Baseball is a simple game. If you have good players and if you keep them in the right frame of mind then the manager is a success." -- Sparky Anderson

22. "When you sign your name on the dotted line, it's more than just playing baseball. You have a responsibility to make good decisions and show people how things are supposed to be done." -- Tony Gwynn

23. "I didn't understand anything about playing baseball. I started playing, and it was enjoyable. Most of my life, I played with older people on my team, in my league. I learned a lot about life. Every day in my life, I learned something new from somebody." -- Ernie Banks

25. "One of the beautiful things about baseball is that every once in a while you come into a situation where you want to, and where you have to, reach down and prove something." -- Nolan Ryan

27. "Do what you love to do and give it your very best. Whether it's business or baseball, or the theater, or any field. If you don't love what you're doing and you can't give it your best, get out of it. Life is too short. You'll be an old man before you know it." -- Al Lopez

28. "My baseball career was a long, long initiation into a single secret: At the heart of all things is love." -- Sadaharu Oh
