The average American sits between 7 and 15 hours a day. In fact, I bet you're sitting down right now reading this article. It's no surprise that leading such a sedentary lifestyle wrecks havoc on our overall health, but did you know that it also drastically decreases your creativity?

Sounds scary, but the good news is the key to boosting those creative juices is as easy as putting one foot in front of the other. It's time to go for a walk!

Some of the greatest visionaries of our time - Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, and even Barack Obama - were fans of walking meetings, and it looks like they were onto something. According to a Stanford University study, a person's creative output increased by 60% when they were walking. If that's not motivation to get up off your chair, I don't know what is.

And for those of you who are already thinking of all the reasons why you can't get outside for some fresh air, don't worry. The study showed that it doesn't matter if you're outside or inside. It's the actual walking that matters, not the environment. A person who walked indoors, on a treadmill facing a blank wall, or outside all produced twice as many creative responses compared to someone sitting down.  The study also found that creativity continued even after a person sat back down after his/her walk.

But If walking isn't your cup of tea, another great way to connect to your creative talents is to tap into your genius. Everyone has a unique way their brain processes problems or challenges they face. The key is seeing that genius, valuing it and having the confidence to implement it.

Ask yourself, what comes easy to you? What is the most natural way you solve problems? How do you approach your favorite job-related activities? These questions will help you start honing in on what your unique genius is. Once you start respecting what you bring to the table and how you can use it to drive serious change, you'll feel reinvigorated and ready to come up with that next big idea.
