Everywhere you look, you see content. Articles. Videos. Books. Podcasts. Radio shows.
There is an endless amount of content out there. You're working on your project. Are people even noticing what you do?
When I first started writing back in 2011, I wrote 3 posts on my wordpress blog. No one saw it. I gave up.
Maybe you have more resilience than I do, but it took me 2 years to try again. Now I have the viewership because I figured out how to stick out.
Another person who was able to stick out from the crowd is Scott Hansen, high performance coach, speaker and best selling author. In addition, he's also the host of Success Hackers, one of the fastest growing Entrepreneurial podcasts that is downloaded and listened to in 65 countries.
I asked him how he was able to stick out in such a busy and ever-changing world.
These are Scott's 7 tips to stick out from the crowd, to get your content seen:
1. Stop focusing on competition
Too many entrepreneurs worry about their competition. They're constantly focusing
on what new products their competition is coming out with, how much they're charging and how they're delivering their products/services. Rather than focus on your competition, start developing a mindset of domination. Strive to be number one in your industry. Your goal is to dominate your space, not compete in it.
2. Become hyper niched
You've heard the saying, 'If you try to please everyone, you'll end up pleasing no one.'
Most entrepreneurs feel their products/services are so amazing, that everyone needs them.
While this may be the case, your goal should be to own your niche.
Get crystal clear on exactly who you are, what clients you serve, and what problems you solve for your clients. You will know exactly where your ideal clients are, where they hang out and who they hang out with.
Once this happens, you will attract them to you effortlessly because you will be seen as the go-to person in your industry.
3. Start a podcast
Scott will never forget the day that a mentor of his said to him, "Scott, I know you want to empower and impact people in their lives and business. You should start a podcast."
He said, "Great, what's a podcast?"
Scott had no idea what a podcast was, but it sounded like something he could be passionate about. In less than two years, his podcast, Success Hackers has been downloaded by individuals in 65 countries, is one of the fastest growing business podcasts on iTunes, and will soon be picked up by iHeart Radio, which has 35 million listeners per day. Starting a podcast is a fantastic, inexpensive way to build your brand and reach new clients, all while positioning you as an authority in your industry.
4. Be a guest on a radio station
Radio stations and podcasts are always looking for great guests to
interview on their show. There's a few different websites where you can find out which podcasts/radio shows are looking for experts in your field.
Scott has personally been a guest on over 50 podcasts/radio stations over the past 12 months, sharing his expertise and knowledge to his niche audience which are Entrepreneurs.
Most of these podcasts don't charge a fee to be a guest. Sharing your expertise on a podcast/radio station immediately elevates your brand and authority.
5. Publish a book
When publishing a book, most of us think that you have to be Steven King, J.K. Rowling, or Tom Clancy to be a successful publisher.
Although these individuals make a ton of money publishing books, there's another way that you can get your book published very inexpensively.
When Scott and I wrote our first books, we published it on Create Space; the self publishing platform owned by Amazon. In Scott's newest best selling book, Success Hackers, he was able to work with a publisher. Don't let the fear of writing a book stop you from actually going through with it. Regardless of whether you work with a publisher, or create the book on Create Space, publishing a book will open so many new opportunities for you.
6. Become a contributing writer for a publication
Many of the top business publications are always looking for great content.
They are looking for experts in certain categories who have a track record of success that can highlight their expertise. You can apply to these publications through their contributing writer forms, but be prepared to have a lot of sample headliners, a killer sample article and a bio already prepared.
If you have a knack for writing great articles, becoming a contributing writer
for a major publication might be a great way for you to become an authority
in your industry.
7. Start speaking
Most people read about speakers who make $10 - $15k for doing a 60 minute speech.
While there are individuals who do make this type of money, the majority of people don't When you first start out, you will be required to talk for free. Eventually, you will get to the point where you will not only be making money for your speeches, but you'll also be able to sell your products/services from the stage. Not only will speaking position you as an authority, it will also boost your confidence in a way that you could have never though possible.
Scott was able to stick out by doing these 7 things. Have you been able to stick out by doing something unique? I'd love to learn more! Comment below.
