Here's a ranking of the 1982 INC. 100 companies by industry. While Apple Computer emerges as the overall front-runner, having multiplied its sales 432.5 times in the past five years, the 15 computer manufacturers among the INC. 100 are runners-up to a trio of women's sports wear producers. Other leading industries include fast food, energy, cable TV, and data communications.

Industries and companies are ranked by five-year sales multiples. As a group, for example, the three companies in the apparel industry have multiplied their sales 22.9 times since 1977, followed by those in the computer business at 19.4 and the food service field at 15.0. The miscellaneous category includes leaders in the manufacture of high-technology adhesives, machine tools, and video games.
