We are quite chagrined at having Iowa ranked 40th in its climate for small business. The ranking is surprising in light of several programs and initiatives that aid business in lowa. Iowa recently cut business taxes using the major provisions of the Economic Recovery Tax Act, reduced property taxes on new equipment and machinery, and established a one-stop office to assist small businesses inquiring about permits, licenses, etc. The state has had a university technical and management assistance center for 19 years, an innovation center to assist inventors, a statewide Small Business Development Center Program involving five centers, a statewide Small Business Administration 503 Certified Development Program, one of the most active SBA programs, and numerous other initiatives that aid overall business.
