I must voice some points of disagreement with your story on CopyTele ("A Marriage of Convenience," People and Innovations, February), a company that I have studied as a financial analyst. In the article, the display screen is described as if it exists: eight times the dot density of alternative technologies, ideal for use in portable computers, an 8 1/2-X-11-inch panel to be manufactured this year. In fact, there is not even a functioning prototype at this time. Flat-panel technology is a black hole that has swallowed a lot of sophisticated capital in the past.
The article makes clear that CopyTele does not have a commercial product and says simply that the company expects to manufacture the panel this year. We regret that some readers may have inferred that there was a prototype.
