As a manufacturer and supplier of building materials to general contractors and subcontractors, I must respond to "coming to Terms" (Hands On, August). We often find ourselves in the position described: The general contractor doesn't get paid, so the subcontractor can't be paid, and so on. But those who are furnishing the general have suppliers who expect to receive their money promptly.

If only two parties are involved, certain exceptions or bending of credit policies may be worked out, but when many creditors are involved, the contractors had better be prepared to pay their bills when they come due, even if it means borrowing the money from a lending institution.
