It is no longer true that only two light-bulb choices exist: inefficient, long-lasting DioLight bulbs; and traditional, also inefficient, incandescents.

PL lamps, compact fluroescent fixtures that screw into any light-bulb socket, are manufactured by most major companies. A PL9 consumes 12 watts and is rated at 10,000 hours of expected life, compared with the 1,000 hours of the 60-watt incandescent bulb it can replace. PL lamps will return their relatively high initial cost many times over in energy saving, reduced labor costs, and reduced air-conditioning bills due to their lower temperature. In addition, the new generation of fluorescents are color-corrected and do not buzz like their predecessors.
