Will videotapes go the way of eight-tracks and 78s? They will if Explore Technology succeeds in pioneering its new approach to delivering and storing video programs. The Scottsdale, Ariz., company has patented a system for sending and receiving videos as compressed signals over high-capacity telephone lines or cable or via satellite. Instead of buying or renting tapes, viewers could phone central or regional video libraries that would transmit selected programs in seconds. CEO Richard Lang sees one $10-billion market among consumers and another among businesses. Privately financed, Explore is pursuing licensing deals with multinationals and expects to bring its first product to market next year.
