"We lost all our money. We had no insurance. Our launch with Whole Foods was scratched," says Harmless Harvest co-founder Justin Guilbert of the 2010 crisis that almost killed his coconut-water company. Guilbert and co-founder Douglas Riboud had just spent nearly $300,000--borrowed from family and friends--to bring a massive shipment of frozen coconut water from Mexico to a facility in Joplin, Missouri, where it would be bottled for their upcoming Whole Foods distribution. But soon enough, they discovered a problem.
