After selling his home-design startup, FreeGreen, in 2014, Ben Uyeda decided to commit to his passion full time, making DIY furniture projects for his YouTube channel, HomeMade Modern.
From past experience, Uyeda knew that creative ventures are hard to scale, and that constant access to his digital tools would be just as vital as access to his power tools: "Being able to review footage in real-time lets me know when I need to reshoot a scene onsite instead of miles away in an office," says Uyeda. Since many of his projects happen at construction sites or in rural locations, Uyeda knew he'd have to find a creative way to bring his office on the road.
So Uyeda purchased a Boulder 100 portable solar panel, a Goal Zero Yeti 1500X portable power station, a Hoek home office desk--which he can collapse and assemble in seconds--and a variety of wireless connectivity solutions, including a Verizon Jetpack.
This flexibility has enabled Uyeda to build a wood-fired hot tub, construct a concrete coffeemaker, turn shipping containers into houses--and post it all to his (now multiple) channels, which boast 1.9 million subscribers and have earned Uyeda an average of around $1.2 million for the past two years. Not bad for doing it all yourself.
