Beyoncé. Whether you love her or hate her, you have to admit she's one heck of a creative businessperson.
Beyoncé has sold millions of albums -- more pointedly, her albums have entertained and inspired millions of listeners. She has created a fashion brand, cultivated millions of dollars in perfume sales, and stood proudly at the front of charity and activist movements. Entourage aside, how does she do it?
Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter is a workaholic but has learned to recognize the need to take care of herself, forcing a discipline of days or weeks off to make up for demands of recording or touring.
When she sings "Mama's just tryin', I can't get no days off," Beyoncé speaks for working mothers and fathers everywhere who are trying to make ends.
Not everyone has the resources that Beyoncé has earned, but working parents can still learn a lot from her about juggling kids and business while taking care of themselves.
Beyoncé's Day Off Rituals
One lesson is that she takes those days off seriously, treating her relaxation rituals as professionally as she does her business routine. For example, even though she is cautious not to work on a day off, Beyoncé still rises at 6 am to make full use of a day's taking it easy.
That first hour may be spent waking up and meditating, but after that, it's back to bed with her husband and kids. She'll then enjoy a slow breakfast with her family over the course of a couple of hours.
Even on a 'relaxing' day, Beyoncé makes time for exercise. Well, exercise can be relaxing too, if you find something you enjoy. Even if you don't enjoy it, exercise is essential for the long-term well-being of your body and mind. For Beyoncé, swimming (especially yacht-side) is a more pleasurable alternative to the work-oriented business of squats.
She will also paint on her day off. Other high-achievers with similarly prolific results swear that making time for multiple pursuits like this pays off. Spend too much time on one project or goal, and you leave your mind nowhere to go. "I think if you can switch between your tasks it's as though you're using different muscles and it can be refreshing," GP and author Jane Shemilt told the BBC in a piece about people who are as productive as Beyoncé.
The evening of Beyoncé's dream day off isn't much more taxing: pizza, a beer, and more family time. Even on a night out partying, she is usually home before midnight. Sleep is an essential part of work and leisure and all-round well-being.
"I am a person who has a hard time shutting off my brain," says the megastar. "But if you are active during your day, you will be so exhausted you can't help but fall asleep. Having peace, happiness and healthiness is my definition of beauty. And you can't have any of that without sleep."
