Labor Day weekend is over and you're feeling the end-of-summer blues. Wait, scratch that. Don't toss in the towel just yet.

As Fall approaches, lets squeeze in one more trip to a warm-weather destination now that the tourists have fled and hotel rates have come back down to earth. What do you think?

Here are 10 U.S.-based Fall getaways to consider extending your Summer:

Cashiers, North Carolina

This is a mountain getaway perched in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. The weather is great, with temperatures above 70 degrees up till October. To get the best bang for the buck, stay at the historic High Hampton Inn (great deals before November 1). If you go in October, don't forget their Oktoberfest for great food, beer, and entertainment.

Dauphin Island, Alabama

This Alabama barrier island with clear Gulf ocean water is a treat and a steal in October. Typically a beach getaway for nearby Mobile, the island offers an array of tasty seafood restaurants, fishing camps and cozy rentals. Ask about Fort Gaines, a National Historic Landmark, and make sure to visit it on the eastern tip.

Lake Tahoe, Nevada and California

This part of the Sierra Nevada Mountains will still register a balmy 76 degrees on average, but the tourist trap is sparse in October. The hiking this time of year is perfect and pristine. Make sure to stay mountainside at Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows or relax lakeside at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort. Watch for spa packages that include breakfast credits and look for special deals like three-night stays that could get you a fourth night free.

Port Townsend, Washington

This is a Victorian-era coast seaport in the Pacific Northwest with a great harbor and foodie scene. It's also a kayaker's paradise, a great place to fish, and it also boasts nearby mountains for hiking and biking. Check out the Fins Coastal Cuisine for wild cod fish-and-chips, and bunk up at Chevy Chase Beach Cabins.

Destin, Florida

Of all your choices of beautiful beaches in the Florida panhandle, Destin stands out as an easy pick for one of the best beach vacations in October. There's beach combing galore here, and the waves are perfect for a boogie boarding experience with the kids. Also consider taking in a deep sea fishing excursions.

Descanso Beach: Catalina Island, California

Just 22 miles off Los Angeles harbor, this picturesque smalltown island is lively in the Fall, with a slew of music, art, film, and wine festivals to choose from. For some beach glamour, hole up at the Descanso Beach Club in the town of Avalon and rent a cabana for the day.

Huntington Beach, South Carolina

This three mile-long beach and state park gets better once summer is over and the crowds are gone. Visitors have an easier time spotting the different varieties of bird that inhabit the island. Drop in at the 2,500-square-foot education center that features a saltwater touch tank and a live alligator. Stay at Wild Dunes Resort in nearby Isle of Palms, which has a golf course, four pools and miles of beachfront.

Coronado Beach, California

This beach getaway gives you ideal conditions for surfing as you bask in the ridiculous Southern California fall sun. There's a leash-free dog beach if you're bringing your four-legged best friend. Experience your stay at the iconic Hotel Del Coronado, which is close enough to San Diego's two other famous attractions: Sea World and the world famous San Diego Zoo.

North Fork: Long Island, New York

If the Hamptons isn't your thing but you love the area's coastal landscapes, North Fork brings cooler nights, smaller crowds and harvest season. Check out some of the state's best wineries, and join a "Pour and Pedal", a leisurely bicycle tour for some vineyard and winery hopping. Cap off your days with a sunset walk along miles of North folk's white sandy beaches and secluded dunes, stopping in at various lighthouses.

Sachuest Beach: Newport, Rhode Island

Just a mile and a half long, this is a popular, clean, surfing beach. Take in the Norman Bird Sanctuary wildlife preserve overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. After your fill of birds and beaches, head to Forty 1 North hotel overlooking Narragansett Bay, and grub on classic New England lobster rolls and clam chowder.
