Here we are, poised to be awash in New Year's Resolutions and while many of them revolve around health and family, plenty of small business owners will be making some for the business.

One resolution that not enough owners have made?

Be an Entrepreneur, not an Expert.

Why?  Well, for starters, too many times, I field questions from small business owners that are WAY down the list of what owners should be concerning themselves with - virtual minutia - and I know that if those questions are being asked, then time and energy has been expended to learn about it.

Think about it like this:  a doctor is an expert.  Years of training have resulted in an individual that is truly the "tip of the sword" but one who may (or may not) know where to find a Band-Aid in their hospital.  The entrepreneur, on the other hand, is the one that understands the complex interplay of medicine, treatment, insurance regulations, and who is going to bring the patient the green Jello that all hospitals seem to serve.

Your goal, if you are to truly grow and scale your business, is to be creating and designing the systems you need to be able to scale and grow your business, not get lost paying bills, bookkeeping, or doing The Job.  Of course, if you are the only employee of the business, you have loads of things to do each day and each week, but it is just as critical that each time you do a repetitive task, you seek to understand how you can document and then train that task for someone else to do.

Think I'm wrong?  Take a few minutes to think about how much it "costs" you to do the books in your business.  Depending on where you are or how you handle the bookkeeping, it could be as simple a few hours a week or cost you a couple hundred dollars a month.

An entrepreneur looks for a bookkeeper, an expert wants to do it themselves.

You see, the entrepreneur has taken one huge step in their own personal development - they understand that they need a system and a team for any task or job that is not in their own field of expertise.  Anything else, ultimately, should be farmed out.

Example?  Here you go - if you can make $100/hour by doing the job that you actually do in your business but aren't able to do that job because you are cleaning your office, then you are an expert stuck in an entrepreneurial position.

Your resolution?  Simple - I want you to go forward into 2018 with your eyes wide open as to what you need to be doing as an owner who expects to grow the business.

ANY task that can be outsourced for a pittance, from mowing the lawn to handling the books should be - and that allows you to concentrate NOT on being an "expert" but rather on growing your business.  The end result is a company that is far more valuable over time than the traditional "small business" that so many experts work in for years and then, ultimately, cannot sell profitably.
