Imagine it's your birthday in 2025. In fact, draw a circle on the ground with that date written on it. Step into it, literally. Believe as if it's already so, already now. Next, pay close attention to who's around and what's happening, what you're seeing and hearing and saying. Approach it with amare (love-based) energy, uplifting and connecting throughout.

This starts a very powerful exercise I learned from renowned executive coach Kathy Fleming to help leaders embody their future and identify what they may need to get there. The key is to really project yourself into the future, feel yourself there, and use all your senses to imagine what could be as if it already is. Then come back to the present to determine how to get there, how to achieve that future.

  • Will you trust yourself to look into your future, no limits?

  • Are you willing to see what may be ahead, with no judgment?

3 Amare Steps to Make Your Future Now

  1. Questions for your future self. Standing in your 2025 circle, notice: What do you see? Who's there? What are you hearing? What are you saying to yourself? What emotions do you have? What has been accomplished? How's your bank account? How's your happiness account?

  2. Questions for your present self. Come back to now and reflect on the future you envisioned. What kind of changes did you make in how you are? In what you do? What did you achieve? What might've got in your way? What or who supported you? What resources did you draw on? Take all that in.

  3. Connect the dots. Now consider the whole exercise. Notice if you let yourself imagine what could really be in your future, powered by the energy of love. Notice your willingness to accept help and support to achieve the future you desire. Feel free to repeat this exercise often, and with your team too.

Go beyond the limits of typical thinking and planning with this projective exercise. Allow yourself to use all your senses to imagine what your future as a leader might be like, and what you can do now to make it all it can be.
