Employers are embracing online training and video conferencing as workplace communications tools, but are less impressed by blogs, wikis and other Web 2.0 applications, a recent survey finds.

Among 1,400 chief information officers recently polled by Robert Half Technology, 60 percent said they currently use or plan to start using online training to communicate with employees. More than half said they also already use or plan to use video conferencing, the California-based IT staffing firm reported.

CIOs said these technologies helped workers collaborate, while offering businesses a cost-effective way to preserve and share company knowledge, the survey found.

At the same time, most respondents were less interested in emerging Web 2.0 technologies, with nearly three quarters saying they had no immediate plans to adopt blogs, wikis, and other networking tools.

Despite their potential benefits, many businesses are likely waiting for these technologies to spread before implementing them as an essential business tool, according to Katherine Spencer Lee, the firm's executive director.

"As newer tools mature, their popularity may increase, but in-person communication likely will remain the most reliable way to keep employees connected, informed and motivated," Lee said in a statement.
