The federal government's current system for collecting business data provides an inadequate gauge of economic trends for new businesses, according to a recent study by the National Academies, a Washington-based research group.

The three-year study recommends increasing the amount of statistical data on start-ups, particularly in fast-growing and innovative sectors of the economy. It also recommends integrating existing business data sources, while organizing the data to enable researchers and policymakers to better track business cycles
