Award-winning GoodHire gets our vote for Best Background Check Service for Small Business 2018. Their services checked all the boxes. Accredited by Better Business Bureau (BBB) with an A+ rating, Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) compliant and National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS) accredited, GoodHire offers three packages as well as add-on report options; all of which fall within the price ranges of competitors. Their website is easy to navigate and understand. This is particularly helpful to those who are new to background screenings.

Recognizing that the background check is part of a potential employee's first impressions of your company, GoodHire touts their automated, easy-to-follow screening process that integrates with many HR platforms and delivers accurate reports. GoodHire manages their services (from sign up through delivery of findings) via a web platform that was selected as one of Human Resource Executive's Top HR Products of 2016, because it is not only focused on the customer's experience but also on that of the job applicant.

But the customer is certainly not forgotten as Business News Daily's report of their selection of GoodHire as the 2018 Best Background Check Service for Small Business points out: "GoodHire offers three levels of background checks, has an easy-to-use online portal and provides outstanding customer service." Their customer support is available via phone, email and online chat. Phone support hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST, Monday to Friday.

GoodHire's packages are straightforward, turn-around times are stated and the pricing is readily available (while many other companies require you contact them for this information). They do offer a customized package for clients running high volumes of background checks, which they define as more than 50. Their packages, as outlined on their website, are:

  • Basic (1 business day) includes Social Security Number Trace + Associated Counties, National Criminal Database Search, and Sex Offender List Search, $29.99

  • Standard (1-3 business days) includes reports from the Basic package plus Domestic Terrorist Watch List Search and 7-Year County Criminal Court Search, $54.99

  • Premium (2-3 business days) includes reports from the Standard package plus Education Verification and Employer Verification, $79.99

  • Add-ons include Identity Checks, Criminal Records Search, Verifications, Motor Vehicle Records, Employment Credit Report, International Background Checks, Drug Screening, Healthcare Sanctions, and Ongoing Alerts. Prices range from $6.99 to $74.99

As with other screening services, there are also additional costs for any fees charged by county courts in the County Court criminal search.

While the cons we found in our review were few, among them was the lack of industry specialization (i.e., no specific reports for landlords, finance, etc.) and there is a one-time set up fee of $49.99 even for the Basic package, which some competitors do not charge.

Overall, it seems the positives outweigh these couple of negatives. The plethora of awards for GoodHire recognize compliance knowledge, innovation, ease-of-use and customer service, among other things. eKomi, a customer-review gathering service, shows GoodHire has earned a ranking of 4.4/5 from verified customers.

For a small business experienced in background screening or one just beginning to understand this process, GoodHire has a lot to offer; not the least of which is easy-to-understand packages and easy-to-access customer service.
