Now that German Chancellor Angela Merkel has officially been named Time magazine's Person of the Year, you might think you knew everything there is to know about this remarkable woman. That would, of course, be very unlikely.

1. Angela Merkel is Europe's longest-serving elected woman leader
Though she is nowhere near unelected British Queen Elizabeth's time in power, Angela has led Germany since she was elected the country's first woman chancellor in 2005.
2. Angela is an expert baker and cook
While her plum cake is of particular note, Angela's personal favorites to cook are potato soup and roulade.
3. Her grandfather was Polish
Angela's grandfather--Ludwig Kazmierczak--was born in Poznan, Poland (then a part of Germany) in 1896. Her father Germanized the family name to Kasner in the 1930s.
4. Angela's nickname is "Mutti"
Despite the fact that Angela Merkel has no children of her own, Germans have given her the nickname "Mutti"--or "Mommy."
5. She is deeply afraid of dogs
Angela became afraid of dogs after being bitten by one in the 1990s. Vladamir Putin knew this when he let his imposing black Labrador door into a meeting with Merkel some years ago.

Angela was married to her first husband--physics student Ulrich Merkel--for just 5 years. She has been married to Joachim Sauer since 1998, who has two sons from a previous marriage.
