While Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday was actually on January 15th, the official observance and federal holiday is today. Regardless of which day you choose to celebrate this great man, it's a time to consider the remarkably powerful impact he had on the course of our nation's history.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a brilliant man who enrolled at Morehouse College when he was just 15 (he earned his bachelor's degree when he was 19). As a key civil rights leader, he was a target for those who wanted to silence his voice for equality. His home was bombed in 1956 and he narrowly avoided death when he was stabbed in 1958 --10 years before he was assassinated in 1968 by James Earl Ray.
