Great leadership is the backbone of any successful business or organization. While some great leaders are born with specific qualities, others must learn over a lifetime. The good news is that while you may have been born with certain traits, you can learn to become a great leader.

Here are five of the most important qualities that all great leaders share. Incorporating even a few of these traits into your personal approach to leadership will take you a long way toward making the transition from good to great.

1. Crystal-clear communication

Communication is the number one skill that great leaders possess. The clearest way to make sure your team is on the same page is to be crystal clear about your goals, vision, and strategy. When you are clear, others can more easily see your message and follow your lead. In a world where people have become used to gray areas, people will flock to those who have a clear and focused vision.

2. Unwavering decisiveness

Great leaders are decisive. When they make a choice, they back it up and stand by it. As a leader, you must follow through and make it clear that you will stick to your guns on most decisions, no matter how hard the path ahead may become. Confidence in leadership comes from consistency in your decisions. You cannot be wishy-washy or indecisive if you want to lead successfully. Your followers need to know that you are in it for the long haul.

3. Bold courage

Courage is a quality that many people think you are either born with or not. The truth is that you can learn how to act more boldly and with more courage. It takes getting out of your comfort zone and building confidence to take risks, big and small. Great leaders are willing to push past their fears and they trust themselves in order to succeed. Courage is not the absence of fear but rather action in the face of fear.

4. Infectious passion

Passion is the secret sauce of successful leadership. When great leaders care, others will care too. The energy and excitement you bring to the table will spread to others. Never be afraid to show how much you care about the work you do, your mission, and the team you work with. Your enthusiasm is your greatest weapon, so never be afraid to use it.

5. Genuine humility

Finally, and perhaps the most important leadership trait of all, leaders need humility. Confidence is attractive, no doubt about it, but a humble leader is a beloved leader. Be grateful for your success but never forget the people who have helped you get there. Tell your people often how grateful you are to have them on the team and the difference they make to your mission. A little humility will go a long way!
