There are a lot of things you can do to be happier at work no matter what your level of happiness already is. When you love your job, it's much easier to smile and have a more positive attitude. If you think of your job as stressful, annoying, and unbearable, you may want to start looking for other work opportunities that will lead you closer to what you like and love to do.
Whether or not you're already happy at work, you can be happier by incorporating the following actions into your day.
1. Take care of what you dread the most.
Finish those tedious tasks you've been avoiding, and say goodbye to that dreadful feeling that's absorbing your energy. Taking care of these tasks first thing in the morning means you don't have to keep thinking about them. This can boost your energy levels for the rest of the day.
2. Don't dwell on the negative things.
Research studies reveal that unhappy people are more likely to dwell on negative things than happy people. Dwelling on negative things can drain you, both mentally and physically. Avoid negative people and negative talk. Focus your thoughts on the things you like at work instead of the things that just get you mad or frustrated.
3. Deliver on your commitments.
Do what you committed yourself to doing -- when you committed to doing it. When you fail to deliver on what you promised, your happiness levels can take a major hit. Whether it's a new product proposal or a project deadline or a status report, make sure that you deliver on your commitments as promised.
4. Make a work-related gratitude list.
What things do you enjoy most about your job? There's always something that you enjoy above all others. List all the things you enjoy at work, from the biggest to the smallest. Keep an inventory of the things you're grateful for. This will boost your happiness while also improving your positive outlook on life in general.
5. Get away from your computer.
Take a few minutes and go visit a colleague who's on the third floor. Say hello, and casually and briefly, touch base on the mutual projects you are both working on. Go for a walk outside during your lunch break. Walking and being exposed to sunlight enhance your mood, focus, and creativity.
Keep in mind that you spend approximately a third of your day at work. Look forward to going to work each day, and embrace the time you spend there. This alone will make you happier.
