With summer coming an end, and another long holiday weekend coming to a close, the first day back to work can be a drag for all concerned. Instead of being energized and excited about returning to their jobs, the members of your team may instead still be checked out--dreamily thinking about those afternoons on the beach, or camping trips in the woods, or mountain hikes.

So, what can you do to help your team get back in gear and performing at their very best after a long holiday?

Fortunately, plenty.

Happify is a company that teaches people how to live happier lives through science-based games and activities. Happify suggests five specific things you can do when you get back to the office after a holiday that will help your team--and you--quickly re-engage and get back in the swing of things.

1. Go out to lunch once a week with your coworkers

Restaurant lunches with people relax us more than eating at our desks alone. Try to find an outdoors spot if possible, one that let's you enjoy a bit of sunshine and fresh air.

2. Bring a plant into the office

You were probably outdoors a lot on vacation. Bring some of the outdoors inside with a plant or two or three. People with plants in their offices are happier than those with no greenery in sight.

3. Send a positive email

A brief email praising a team member's success encourages more success and creates a positive work environment. Remember: You get more of what you reward--and that includes gratitude and kindness.

4. Get up early and do something that you love before work

Doing something we love primes us to be happier. When we are, we perform better. You'd be surprised how much more you can get done in a day when you get up just an hour earlier.

5. Talk about your vacation

When someone asks how your summer was, find something specific and positive to share, rather than just "It was good." Tell a fun story about a specific accomplishment or challenge you faced. It will boost the positivity that you project in the office.
