There's no doubt about it: there is money to be made online. In fact, if you know how to effectively navigate and use social media, you can even Tweet, "like," or post your way to fame, fortune, and success.
Instagram began as a simple way to share personal memories and images, but it is now a massively powerful advertisement and sales platform. As users amass followers, they are able to build brands, sell product, and gain online popularity.
But with great power, comes great responsibility. And how you attain that digital power can negatively affect you in real life.
Here are the worst ways to become an Instagram influencer.
Have no plan.
Instagram success requires hard work, strategy, and planning. If you are just posting pictures of your morning breakfast, don't expect results any time soon. There is a lot that goes into building a successful account -- hashtags, scheduled posts, photo editing, and more. Be careful about what kind of expectations you have for your account, or you may be riddled with disappointment.
Sacrifice your mental health.
According to Shirley Cramer, the CEO of Royal Society for Public Health, "Social media has been described as more addictive than cigarettes and alcohol and is now so entrenched in the lives of young people that it is no longer possible to ignore it when talking about young people's mental health issues." The organization even named Instagram the worst social media app for mental health. Feeling validated online feels good for a few seconds, but know that there is more to life than a few "likes."
Spend loads of money.
What will a few Instagram posts costs you? For 26-year-old Lissette Calverio, $10,000 in debt. Calverio's quest for Instagram stardom had her finding herself in financial ruin, after she "splurged on designer handbags, expensive clothes and luxurious vacations while working low-salary jobs, including an internship in New York." Much of the travel she did was "strictly" for the platform, and she would shop for expensive clothes in order to "take the perfect 'Gram." Already established Instagram influencers can earn thousands per post, but if you're not that successful just yet -- avoid digging yourself into a financial hole you cannot climb out of.
Finding new ways to build your business is always exciting. But in this digital age, don't lose yourself along the way to social media success.
