The phenomenal success of the film, Barbie, caught a lot of people off guard–not least of which were the many film industry insiders who had tried and failed to bring the project to life over the years. It wasn’t until Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, was brought in that Barbie was greenlighted by Warner Bros. Pictures. And when Robbie convinced Greta Gerwig to direct the film, that was the icing on the cake.

Of course, the rest is history.

By September 2023, Barbie had become not just the highest-grossing film in the 100-year history of Warner Bros., but the highest-grossing film by a female director in domestic box office receipts, and the largest worldwide film release of the year.

So, what’s next for Margot Robbie, the box office magician who made “Barbenheimer” a surprise addition to the pop culture vocabulary?

Monopoly.

As in the classic board game that has entertained generations of kids–and adults–since it was released by Parker Brothers in 1935 (the company was purchased by Hasbro in 1991). And it’s no slouch when it comes to sales. According to estimates, more than 275 million copies of Monopoly have been sold, placing it in the top five bestselling board games of all time.

The announcement of the upcoming film was made by Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, which holds the development rights. And after the tremendous financial success of Barbie, I’ve got to think that everyone involved has lots of dollar signs in their eyes.

I for one am really looking forward to seeing how Margot Robbie and her team transform this iconic game–a game that has taught children everywhere the basics of economics–into a live-action film.

Mr. Monopoly (aka Rich Uncle Pennybags)? Check.

Jake the Jailbird? Sure.

Scottie Dog? Of course.

But what role will Robbie play? While that remains to be seen, I have no doubt that she’ll bring her same energy–and smarts–to the occasion.
