Everyone knows what anger means for the Incredible Hulk. Put David Banner into a fit of rage and the general populace will witness destruction and a whole lot of danger. Even Buddha gives anger bad reviews, as he has asserted that holding on to anger is like "grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else...you are the one who gets burned."

Across the board, it seems, no one enjoys or appreciates anger.

Granted, that is a valid position to hold. Anger can make others feel bad, and can have a negative effect on our own feelings. Anger makes us act irrationally. Anger makes us act out of character and out of line.

In a world where we strive to manage and even treat anger as if it were an ailment, it is still possible to utilize anger in positive ways that can better our lives. When you get angry, try channeling that anger into power and productivity that you can use.

When you allow anger to fester without action--that is, you fail to find either an outlet for your feelings or a fix to your problem--you may find yourself in a bad head-space. Andrea Brandt, PhD, says that "moving out your feelings" can effectively get "stuck emotions moving up and out of the body, thereby reducing or preventing the toxic emotional buildup that may be spilling out all over your life."

So how do you transform your anger into motivation and success? First, find an activity that prevents you from suppressing your anger. Physical movement such as exercise, going for a drive, or even journaling are popular techniques. Engaging in slow, deep, controlled breaths is an effective activity as well.

As you allow yourself to release your emotions and aggression, you also give yourself space and energy to think about what triggers your anger in the first place. Only after doing this can you use your feelings as motivation to change your situation. You will find yourself being more proactive, invigorated, and driven to do more for yourself.

We cannot get rid of feelings that are negative or unproductive if we do not acknowledge and work with them. But, as Brandt states, "Because they are only feelings, we can master them, and reveal the new truths that help us move forward positively."
