Do you ever feel like you're putting in hours and hours of work, but not really seeing concrete results? If so, you're definitely not alone. Most of us lead similar lifestyles, in which we toil away for very little--or even sometimes zero--results, believing that achieving our goals will give us the happiness we've been waiting for in our lives.

Unfortunately, that is not often the case.

According to Emma Seppala--science director for Stanford University's Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education--this goal-oriented approach will not necessarily make you happy or successful. In fact, hundreds of neuroscience and psychology studies suggest that the opposite is actually true.

What matters most is finding happiness first.

According to Emma, there are 7 powerful ways you can augment your happiness, and welcome your success as a result.

1. Manage your energy

We all burn out so easily these days, with our fast-paced world of tech and constant interconnectedness. Don't throw all of your energy into a single project for a short period of time. Your mind, body, and spirit will burn out before you can complete it to fruition.

2. Do nothing

Take time in between all the hectic running around to sit down and hear your own thoughts. Having the mental space to reevaluate what exactly you want, and why you're doing what you do, allows you to tap into your creativity. It also lets you feel good about what you might be doing right--and just how far you've come.

3. Find your resilience

Resilience is the ability to bounce back - something absolutely necessary when trying to recover from failure. Remember that the only way someone truly doesn't succeed is by never having tried at all. Don't stress about setbacks. Your body (and your mind) will thank you.

4. Live in the moment

Stay present in all of your actions, and focus on the here and now--not on some hazy future that may never come to pass. It might be hard at first, but with some practice, you'll find it easier to maintain your focus on the present.

5. Show compassion to others

Express to others how much they matter to you. Show them how much you care and appreciate their presence in your life. Your kindness will often be reciprocated and your relationships will be able to grow.

6. Step outside your comfort zone

Pushing ourselves is the only way we truly get anywhere; so don't just rest where you may feel overly comfortable. Go to the limit and beyond. See how far your own curiosity and will can take you from where you are today.

7. Be good to yourself

Most of all, it's important to take good care of yourself. Remind yourself how much you've accomplished, that what you've accomplished is important, and that your journey matters. It'll definitely make you happier--and more successful.
