Want to know the secret to staying happy all day? It begins with waking up right. Instead of leaping out of bed with the chime of your alarm, take some time for yourself while you're still in bed. When you take care of yourself--both body and mind--it sets the tone for the rest of your day.

Start your day off right with these five things the happiest people do each morning before getting out of bed.

1. Drink water

Did you know that by the time we wake in the morning many of us are already suffering from some of the early symptoms of dehydration such as lethargy, inability to concentrate and the beginnings of a headache? No wonder so many of us wake up to feelings of grogginess and fluster. The very first thing you should reach for when you wake is water--keep a water bottle within arms reach and aim for at least 8 ounces before you get out of bed.

2. Reflect

Reflect upon the things that happened yesterday you were and weren't particularly happy with. For those things that didn't go so well, think of a couple ways of avoiding any repeats today--think of a plan A and B, just in case. Go an extra step further and forgive yourself for any mistakes you may have made, but also give yourself a pat on the back for those things you did well.

3. Give thanks

Next, take the time to think about a couple things in your life that you are thankful for. Sometimes our problems can seem larger than life and overwhelming, but giving thanks, even for the little things, is an easy way to put things in perspective and will create increased inner happiness with each appreciation.

4. Practice breathing

Now that you have had your water, reflected and thought about how grateful you are, inhale and exhale for a couple minutes--a mini meditation session to clear your thoughts and oxygenate your brain. Practicing breathing before getting out of bed each morning is a tension reliever and can help with clarity, relieve pain and even strengthen your immune system.

5. Stretch and smile

Lastly, stretch your entire body from the tips of your fingers down to your toes, tightening and relaxing every muscle in your body. And, while stretching your body, stretch your cheek muscles with a smile. After all, smiling increases the release of feel happy chemicals in your brain which actually make you feel so much happier. After a good stretch and a big smile you will feel like you can conquer anything--and get out of bed without grumbling.
