TikTok, one of the latest social media platforms to emerge, was created by a major Chinese company in 2017. At inception, it was primarily used as a lip-syncing platform targeting a younger crowd. However, since being launched, this site has grown into a full short-form video content hub (with some claiming it is Vine's replacement).

TikTok offers features similar to those of many other social media platforms mashed together. This is one of the reasons people tend to stick around, scrolling through the posts much longer than on other social sites. As a business owner, though, this platform may have stayed under your radar, but with its popularity and growth, paying attention to what it offers is highly recommended.

The Number of Users Is Impressive

Users of TikTok are mainly between the ages of 18 and 34. Young people were fast to adopt the site in the early days--when it still had the name Musical.ly--like many of the other social media platforms labeled as "hot" in the past.

While the users on this site are still heavily skewed to the younger generation, the number of adults who are flocking to the platform is significant enough it cannot be ignored. In fact, more than one in eight adults in the U.S. between the ages of 18 and 24 have begun to use this platform. Today, there are more than 1.5 billion users, including parents, grandparents, teachers, cops, dentists, and more.

TikTok Users Aren't Passive

Before the TikTok app is even opened, users are already making a commitment to the immersive experience it offers. Video is the only type of content that has the ability to fully capture your attention. Not only do you have to be looking at the screen, but you must also turn the sound on because the audio plays a huge role in the content being consumed.

This means that when someone opens the app, they have their full attention on the videos being watched -- just think if one of them was a video about what you offered? Pretty compelling, right?

Easily Capture User Attention

One of the most valuable features offered by TikTok is how content is presented to users. Unlike Facebook, Instagram, and other sites, the content on TikTok takes up the full screen. This means there are no distractions or "partial" impressions.

This is extremely different from platforms where an impression may be counted when just part of the post is shown. With TikTok, you have the user's full attention, at least for a split second. Your job is to figure out how to keep them watching, which is challenging but not impossible.
