Cascade Engineering
Specializes in large-part plastic injection molding for a variety of industries.
This female-run plastic-mold-injection manufacturer and certified B Corp has racked up accolades for its commitment to making plastics environmentally sustainable. An early adopter of antiracist hiring and management practices, Cascade has also become a community leader in equitability--even hiring professional actors from Grand Rapids, Michigan, for regular, instructional reenactments of racial bias occurring at the company. The company recruits from nontraditional talent pools, including the young and the formerly incarcerated, to populate its staff, now at 800-plus workers.
Opentrons
Creates robots to automate experiments, improving collaboration between scientists and allowing them more time to pursue important research questions.
Shortly after the initial Covid-19 outbreak, Opentrons stepped up to fill the gap in testing, both in the U.S. and worldwide. The company partnered with leading scientists and municipal leaders in New York City to open a dedicated testing lab designed to speed up delayed testing results that dramatically reduce the efficacy of tracing and isolation efforts. The lab has run more than two million tests and helped drive down the price per test by over 70 percent, according to the company.
Velentium
Offers secure design, development, production, and post-market services for companies that make therapeutic and diagnostic active medical devices.
In response to the Covid-19 crisis, Velentium revamped its entire operation in four weeks, allowing Ventec Life Systems—a longstanding client—to partner with General Motors, bringing ventilator production from 200 per month to 10,000 per month. Additionally, in the past 12 months, Velentium's team has been involved in developing devices that enable those with paralysis to walk, help those who suffer from memory issues to regain memory function, give the physically locked-in a voice, and provide relief to people with chronic pain.
Aclima
Measures and analyzes air pollution and greenhouse gases worldwide with its sensor network and cloud-based software, enabling reductions in emissions and promoting public health.
Aclima’s hyperlocal air quality measurements have helped West Coast communities respond to a record-breaking year for wildfires as well as lead emissions reduction plans for cleaner air for all communities. The recently certified Public Benefit Corporation works together with air quality regulators and local environmental justice advocates, including West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project and Mothers Out Front, to improve public health. This year, it launched free online interactive air quality reports in West Oakland, Richmond–San Pablo, and the San Diego portside area. Women and people of color occupy more than half of the company's leadership positions.
TerraCycle
Works to move people from disposable to durable products and specializes in the collection and repurposing of hard-to-recycle post-consumer waste.
TerraCycle has helped change people’s relationship with waste by offering free national recycling programs around the world, with companies including PepsiCo and Bic, to help consumers recycle hard-to-recycle products. Just over a year after launching it’s newest initiative, Loop, a global shopping platform aimed at eliminating waste by partnering with brands and retailers to convert the packaging of household products from single-use to refillable designs, TerraCycle has partnered with companies including Ulta, McDonald’s, Burger King, and Tim Horton’s. In September 2020, Loop expanded and is now available across the contiguous 48 United States, the U.K., and France.
