ConvertKit is a software tool aimed at automating and managing subscriber lists and email marketing campaigns. The five-year-old company founded by Nathan Barry currently has more than 18,000 paying subscribers, including Tim Ferriss and author Gretchen Rubin. Barry started the company as a personal challenge in 2013. He invested $5,000 and gave himself six months to grow the business to that same amount in monthly recurring revenue. A year and a half later, ConvertKit was averaging less than $1,500. He knew he either had to shut it down or go all in. Opting for the latter, he poured another $50,000 into the business, almost all of his savings at the time, and hired a remote team to double down on sales. Two years later, ConvertKit grew its annual revenue to more than $4 million. In 2017, it made $9.5 million in annual revenue, and Barry expects to do about $14 million by the end of this year. Currently, the company has 34 remote employees, and generates over $1.02 million in monthly recurring revenue. --Guadalupe Gonzalez
