Founded in 2007, Scientist.com is an online marketplace through which pharmaceutical companies can outsource activities such as gene editing and toxicology tests to as many as 22,000 vendors. It claims to have reduced the time for the entire process--which can take up to six months to be fully set up with a vendor--to a day. Scientist.com takes a 5 percent cut from what research organizations make on each transaction. Clients including Pfizer and AstraZeneca as well as the National Institutes of Health helped the company book $50.2 million in 2017 revenue. It plans to expand to other disciplines such as cosmetic testing and crop science.
