Here's the thing: most of these experiences are only valuable when shared. It's time for me to pay it forward. I want to help you live the most fulfilling, epic life possible. So today, I'll be sharing with you my top 100 life experiences that you should try:
1. Celebrate a huge win - "I love it when no one recognizes my accomplishments," said no one ever. Whether it's a personal or work victory, take a moment to celebrate with 100 percent of your enthusiasm. When I worked at Box, I would ring a huge gong with my coworkers and give each other high fives. It was awesome. Every. Single. Time. People love to feel appreciated.
2. Chase your passion wholeheartedly - Maybe it'll work out. Maybe it won't. But if it does, it'll be a heck of a story. Jennifer is the founder and president of, a public relations and social media marketing firm. Before she started her PR firm in 2005, she was a civil litigation attorney. After four years though, she never really felt like it was the right path. It always felt more like a job than a career.
One day, Jen decided to contact the owner of a fragrance brand and told her how much she loved her products. She asked her to send her a box of products that she could use as samples to pitch to the media and send to celebrities. She did this for free.
She ended up giving a sample of a perfume called "I Am Beautiful" to Christina Aguilera, who had a song at the time with that same title. Then, she told an editor at InTouch magazine about this fragrance and that Christina Aguilera was a fan. They ran the story, and the owner of the brand said it had the biggest impact on sales that she had ever experienced. She's now been featured on Forbes, Business Insider, Huffington Post, Yahoo Finance and Entrepreneur Magazine. #ChaseYourDreams
3. Smile at someone and compliment them - I used to be a busboy and waiter at Souplantation. Most of the time, people treated me like I was invisible. Well, unless they wanted more pink lemonade, that is. But every once in a while, someone would smile at me and say something nice. It made me feel like I was on top of the world. You probably burn one-tenth of a calorie by smiling and complimenting someone. It takes very little effort from you and yet it can make someone's day. Try it. Be a smiling hero for someone today.
4. Be fearless - One of my friends Hansen Shieh left his high paying job in finance to start a company calledin the food industry. He had zero prior experience in this space. It didn't matter. He dove right in. He sampled tons of different sauce ingredients, built out a business plan and worked endlessly to put together an amazing product that he could be extremely proud of.
Being fearless doesn't mean not feeling fear. We all feel fear. It means having control over that fear versus letting that fear control you. Fear can be constructive. It forces you to be thoughtful around many aspects of your process and to be ready for obstacles that lie ahead. If your dreams don't scare you, it's possible that you're not dreaming big enough. Don't let fears be the gatekeeper to your dreams. Be fearless like Hansen.
5. Be vulnerable - "Life is so perfect!" said all the famous people on Instagram. That's what they want you to think. That's not real life. No one's life is perfect. And that's okay! In fact, people will relate to you more when you're vulnerable. We like to see that other people are flawed just like us. If you want to truly build meaningful relationships, you'll have to be vulnerable at some point. It's the only way to get close to someone. It shows that you trust them.
6. Never eat alone - "I love eating at a restaurant while reading a book by myself." It's hard to believe that statement. I've probably seen fewer than five people in my entire life do that at a restaurant. Even people who come in and sit at the bar alone end up making friends with other people. Look, you're going to eat that meal anyway. May as well do it while getting to know someone or with someone you care about! This gives you a chance to bond with someone. I did this at Box all the time and it helped me make a ton of friends over a period of two years. Want to know why? It's because during lunchtime, we usually stopped talking about work and finally started talking about our personal lives. Some people call this small talk. I call this friendship.
7. Share an Uber ride with someone - Sure, you could read an article on your phone during that Uber ride, but don't. Stop being a social hermit. Shared Uber rides are awesome because it gives you a change to genuinely connect with someone. I just did this on one of my last rides. Guess what happened? After some obligatory small talk, we laughed over a few good jokes and bonded over the city. At the end of the cab ride, I found out she was the sister of one of my friends. Now I have a new friend. All because I decided to say hello during an Uber ride.
8. Conquer a fear - I'm deathly afraid of heights. And that's why I signed up for a helicopter ride in San Francisco. You should have seen my face as the helicopter dove under the bridge. I have it on video. I don't think I'll ever show it publicly. It's just too embarrassing. My stomach hurt for the next two hours after the flight. But I felt good. I conquered a fear. On to the next one.
9. Commit to a real workout routine - Maybe it's a 15-minute daily walk. Maybe it's P90X. Maybe it's circuit training. Maybe it's the Insanity workout. We all start off at different levels of workouts because we're all unique. The key is committing. Once you commit and do the workouts, you'll notice something: progress. You'll feel physically stronger, your stamina will increase, and your mind will be sharper. Most importantly, you'll realize that you can accomplish goals that you set out for yourself. That's a huge mental victory that can change your life. Need motivation?
10. Learn to share your story - Everyone has a unique story. One of my friends almost died from kidney failure when he was in his early twenties. He was on dialysis for many months while waiting for a kidney transplant. The only problem: they couldn't find a kidney donor for his blood type. Then one day, his mother went to the gym. Distraught over the situation, she began to cry while on the treadmill. Another gym member walked up to her and asked her what was wrong. She told her to leave her alone. That same person came back and asked again. She finally told her that her son was dying and that he need a kidney transplant but no one matched his blood type. The woman asked what his blood type was. She told her. It turns out they matched. The woman said she would donate her kidney.
Today, my friend is alive because a random stranger decided to donate her kidney to save him. His story inspires me every single day. Learn to tell your story. You never know whose life you could change.
11. Make a trip to the snowy mountains - Whether it's snowboarding, skiing, or just camping out at a log cabin in the snowy mountains, this is one of the best ways to disconnect from the digital world and to find time for yourself. I love sitting at the top of the mountain. It's completely quiet. It's peaceful. It's refreshing. Sometimes I just sit there for a while thinking about life. In a world where almost everything is on demand and moves incredibly fast, it's good to pause for a moment. To reflect.
12. Host a dinner party - One of the best way to spend time with friends (and to make new ones) is to host a dinner party. People often love this because they feel special that you invited them to a small dinner. It also gives them a chance to meet new friends, too. I usually invite 6 people. That's a good sized crowd before it gets too loud and hard to talk to everyone.
13. Play a team sport - When I was growing up I played basketball a lot. I learned a lot from it. It taught me how to communicate with others effectively. For example, I'd yell out, "Screen left" if the competition's teammate was about to do that. It taught me how much people can achieve when they work together. It taught me to never give up. No matter how bad the score may have been, we always tried to put in maximum effort.
14. Go to a live sporting event - Preferably one that has a packed stadium. Football, soccer, basketball, tennis, or whatever suits your fancy. You'll feel a jolt of excitement and energy from the crowd of tens of thousands of people cheering with you. It's unlike anything I've experienced. Especially when there's a game winner.
15. Learn to cook one dish really well - It doesn't matter what the dish is. Just learn to cook at least one dish really well. Need help? YouTube it. For me, it's an omelet. I've spent years working on how to cook a nice omelet, so that it's not burned or overcooked. The trick is inLearning to cook one dish will give you a sense of accomplishment and appreciation for food as well. Because then you'll realize how hard it is to make a great meal. 16. Try new food - Speaking of food, try something that's completely foreign and exotic to you. Just make sure it's safe to eat. For me, it was chicken feet. Yes, they serve that at dim sum restaurants. When I first saw it, I thought, "I'm eating that?" And then I ate it. And it was so good. I order it almost every time I'm at that restaurant now. When you do this, what you're really doing is opening yourself up to new experiences. You're testing your assumptions. Don't limit yourself to a world view that's constrained. There's so much out there to explore and experience. It's what life is about. Expand your horizons.
17. Dance like no one's watching - Get jiggy with it. Do the Nae-Nae. Or heck, go for theJust make sure your partner's been doing some shoulder workouts.
18. Go on a biking trip - This is such a great way to explore a new place. Sure, you could take an Uber or a cab, but when you're on a bike you can slow down and really take in the sights of a new city. Plus, you get a workout in. #winning
19. Have a deep conversation without looking at your phone - Have you ever had a conversation while looking at your phone at the same time? I have. It usually goes like this: Someone says something. I look up from the phone and ask, "Sorry, can you repeat that?" The only problem is that when you do this, what you're really saying is, "I don't care about you." Put down the phone. Really look at the person. Listen to them. I just did this with my dad recently and it was one of the best conversations we've ever had. Try it.
20. Refrain from using your phone, computer, or TV for an entire weekend - Want to take it a step further? Refrain from using any digital product for an entire weekend. One of my close friends does this by hiking and camping in the wilderness. He loves it because he feels so at ease. We live in a world of information overload. Taking a break from it once in a while is a good thing.
21. Fall deeply in love - To quote Moulin Rouge (my favorite movie of all time), "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return." I've been in love only once in my life. It happened in a way I never expected. It seems like it happens for most people this way. I had snuck into a Twitter party in Barcelona. A beautiful woman walked by and smiled. I was smitten. I said hello. Ever since that moment, she's changed my life. One of the most fulfilling things in life you can ever experience is to fall deeply in love. Take the leap. You'll be glad you did.
22. Learn a different language - You can use a free amazing language learning app like Duolingo. It's how I'm learning Spanish now. Now my trips to Barcelona are twice as entertaining!
23. Mentor someone - You've got some great life experiences. Whether it's love, friendships, career, entrepreneurship, traveling, or any other subject, you've learned something profound. Why keep it all to yourself? Pay it forward. Share those experiences with others. Be a mentor.
24. Find your own mentor - Surround yourself with the type of person you want to become. Awesomeness is contagious.
25. Go to a live Ellen show - This is a must. She's hilarious. Have you seen her show? If you haven't, you're missing out on life.Oh wait, you want to be featured on the show? Then talk to Jen, the master of PR.
26. Perform on stage - Whether it's a piano recital, a hip hop dance routine, or singing, try to perform on stage once in your life. Yes, I know 90 percent of you have stage fright. But that's the best part about it. You get to conquer a fear and you'll likely feel a rush of adrenaline as you're performing on stage. When I was a kid, I performed a play in front of hundreds of people. It was one of the best experiences of my life. Hearing the audience laugh, cry, and then erupt in applause was exhilarating.
27. Give a speech - Maybe it's a speech to millions of people. Maybe it's to ten people. Give it a try. Giving a speech makes you a better writer and also teaches you how to memorize and articulate important points. It's an incredibly powerful tool, especially if you want to be a persuasive leader.
28. Go on a road trip - Pack a bunch of stuff into an RV or a car and go on a road trip with your friends. You'll bond over the long drives, enjoy new types of foods and experiences along the way, and create some unforgettable memories. I did this trip from North Carolina all the way west to California. To this day, I'll remember the crazy night out in New Orleans, the blazing heat in Arizona (it was so hot we spent most of our time in a mall), and long talks I had with friends while driving through Texas.
29. Build something from scratch - In business, it's incredibly fulfilling to build something from ground up. You and your colleagues are in control of your destiny. You can shape the vision, strategy and direction. It's infinitely harder to do this than to incrementally improve an existing business that has already achieved success. You'll also learn a lot more. Try building something.
30. Negotiate a great salary - The prerequisite to this? Do great work. When you add a tremendous amount of value, it makes it easier for you to request a higher salary.
31. Visit wine country - This means different things for different people, but to me it means Napa or Sonoma. I'm California born and raised, can you blame me? Learning about how wine is made at these wineries and then tasting some of the best wine in the world is an incredibly fun and relaxing experience, especially if you go with the right group of people.
32. Dig your toes into the sand - Feel the sun shine on your face, the light breeze sweep across your body and the warm sand between your toes. It's hard not to relax when you visit the beach.
33. Go on a horseback ride - I admit it, the only time I've ever been on a horse was for a photo shoot at school when I was a tiny kid. But someone once told me there's nothing like it. She said you build a connection and a bond with the horse that's very personal. In addition to that, you get a great workout as it takes a strong core and balance to ride effectively.
34. Have your portrait painted - Wouldn't it be interesting to see how an artist views you? If you're on a budget, you can hire someone from Fiverr to do it!
35. Create one piece of art - To quote Dead Poet's Society: "We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for." Art is absolutely an essential part of being human. Create something. Express yourself. It'll open up a new world. 36. Take a beautiful photo - Nowadays, you don't need a fancy SLR camera that costs a thousand dollars to take amazing photos. Your smartphone can. So the next time you have a beautiful moment in life, like seeing the sunset or a blooming flower, capture it! If it doesn't turn out that well, just make sure your filter game is on point.
37. Write anywhere - On a blog. On Medium. On Quora. On. On a piece of paper. You've got amazing life experiences. Tell those stories online. Share them with the world so we all get a little bit wiser. One of the hardest parts of writing is simply starting. Just go!
38. Paint whatever inspires you - How do you define great art? I don't know. It's hard to describe. And I just spent a few weeks in Europe looking at a ton of art from some famous museums. One of my favorites was Picasso because it was so unique. He took a big artistic risk and it paid off. He could have painted like everyone else, but he didn't. And that's why creating art is so cool. It can inspire people to challenge the status quo. That's what it did for me.
39. Genuinely accept a compliment - A lot of times people get a compliment and I see them brush it off. Instead of just saying "thank you," tell the person how much their compliment means to you. I bet you'll have a better connection after that.
40. Surprise your parents with a visit - I know as I've gotten older, it's become harder to spend more time with my parents. For many of us, our parents worked incredibly hard to provide a better life for us. One of the best things we can do is show them how grateful we are for their love by paying them a surprise visit. I know every time I've come home I can always count on seeing a huge smile on my mom's face.
41. Give credit where it's due - There will likely be a moment in life where someone gives you credit for something you didn't do. Don't take credit for it. Make sure the right person gets their kudos. You'll feel better having done the right thing. Fake success doesn't last long anyway.
42. Praise others for their success - When your coworker or friends crushes it, praise them for their success. It'll make them feel like they're on top of the world.
43. Host an effective meeting - Do you know how many meetings I've been in that were completely ineffective? I'd say 30 percent of them. That's being conservative. Make sure your meeting has a clear goal, the right stakeholders, starts on schedule, and has an effective call to action. Also, let's say you set 30 minutes for the meeting but you accomplish everything in 10 minutes. Guess what? The meeting is over. Next.
44. Host a team building event - This is such an awesome way to get to know your teammates on a personal level and for you to build team spirit. Don't overlook the power of a team building event. One day, your employees will say, "Remember that awesome team building event we did?" You'll reminisce, laugh, and smile.
45. Crush it in an interview - The kind of interview where you do a fist pump right after you leave a room. If you need help prepping,I put together for you.
46. Host a huge marketing / networking / customer event - I did 17 of these last year. They're such a great way to build your professional network. 47. Get rejected - Experiencing rejection is a good thing. Chances are that you'll experience it in life unless you're hiding under a rock. Rejection builds resilience. It teaches you to learn from your failures. It teaches you how to
48. Sleep under the stars - I did this while camping in Yosemite. It took my breath away. I've never felt so connected to nature in my life until that moment.
49. Play in a band - I played the clarinet for my high school school band. Not all of us can be rock stars. It still counts though. Kind of.
50. Give to charity - Did you know studies show that giving to charity makes us happier and can lower blood pressure? Try giving back to the community.
51. Travel to one of these cities - I know, I know, I already told you to travel to a foreign country in one of my points. But let's get specific. After all, I've already traveled to 75 cities, so you may as well take advantage of my experiences! Check out these cities: Barcelona (my favorite European city), Rome, Cinque Terre, Paris, London, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Miami, Taipei, Oahu, or Chicago.
52. Go for an epic hike - It's a great workout and you can get stunning views. Yosemite is a great example of good hiking.
53. Eat pasta in Italy - Specifically Cacio e Pepe. This cheese and pepper minimalist pasta will blow your mind. Unless you're on the paleo diet.
54. Kissing in the rain - There's something magically romantic about it. Just make sure you live close by so you can warm up fast!
55. Build an idea jar - Need a surprise to liven things up? Anytime you come up with a new idea (for example, a romantic idea like going for a helicopter ride with your spouse), put it into the idea jar on a little post it note. Each week, you pull one out and have something amazing to do.
56. Watch the those awesome movies that everyone talks about - Because movies have the power to change your perspective on life. Plus, we have Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. It's not exactly hard to find them!
57. Read an amazing book - The kind of book you can't put down. Great authors will inspire you with new ideas. My life changed after I read Tim Ferris's Four Hour Work Week. Ever since then I've aspired to build a lifestyle business.
58. Take an improv class - Doing this will improve your ability to respond to social situations you're normally uncomfortable with. Your fast thinking and sense of humor will dramatically improve. Hopefully.
59. Spend a day with your grandparents and parents and hear their stories - How can you understand and connect with your family if you've never heard their life stories? Take the time to really get to know what they've been through.
60. Karaoke at the top of your lungs - Caution: Do so at your own risk. You may end up having an abundance of fun and high fives.
61. Go to the Louvre - Or the Picasso museum in Barcelona. Or any other awesome placed filled with art. Notice how there are hundreds if not thousands of people there to view art. Seeing greatness will remind you of how big of an impact you can make on the world.
62. Visit Las Vegas - There's simply nothing like it. The bright lights, yelps of euphoria and amazing buildings create a really unique experience. Viva Las Vegas!
63. Run a 5K / 10K / Half Marathon / Full Marathon - I never thought I'd be able to complete a marathon in my life. I still don't know. I haven't tried. But I did complete a half marathon. And it was really hard. I felt great at the end of it because there was a moment where I wanted to quit. It was around mile 11. I kept going. And I finished. That's what mattered.
64. Meditate - Ever have a cup of coffee and feel like a million thoughts are going through your head? Try closing your eyes, taking a deep breath and meditating for a few minutes. If you need an app to help you, check out Headspace.
65. Try a Cronut - "Seriously, this is on the list?" That's probably what you're thinking right now. I bet you've never tried a cronut before.
66. Tell your parents you love and appreciate them - That's it. Simple as that.
67. Saying no without having to explain yourself - It's okay to say no to things. You can't make time for everything. Try saying no without explaining the reason why. Sometimes it's just unnecessary.
68. Move to a new city - Moving to a new city will help you learn how to be independent and get you out of your comfort zone. This will stretch you socially in an awesome way.
70. Snapchat a funny moment to a friend - I love Snapchat because it's like sharing a moment when the person's right next to you. It happens and then it's gone and all you have are your memories. But please, make it a fun Snapchat.
71. Read an article on Medium - Medium is an incredible place to learn from for two reasons: there are amazing writers on the platform and they often write without a filter. You can feel the raw emotion in their writing.
72. Go to the spa - Because everybody needs some time off.
73. Go to a live comedy or improv show - This will remind you not to take life so seriously.
74. Practice gratitude daily - Every morning, remind yourself of three things you're grateful for. It will keep you humble.
75. Take an acting class - Because sometimes it's good for you to get out of your comfort zone. It'll remind you to stretch yourself to see what you're capable of. Plus it's a ton of fun and a great way to meet people.
76. Take a power nap - I get it. You want to move mountains. That's awesome. Just don't forget to take a break now and then. It's a long journey, after all.
77. Surprise someone to make them smile - Because who doesn't love a good surprise?
78. Greet a loved one at the airport - You've just been on a long exhausting flight. Then you see a loved one at the gate, their eyes light up and their smile is a mile wide. They run to you and hug you. It's one of the best feelings in the world.
79. Stare into someone's eyes for four minutes without saying anything - The New York Times wrote an article that discussed how having an intimate conversation with someone by asking 36 key questions and staring in their eyes for four minutes silently could help people fall in love. I tried it. It didn't work. But it was fun. And memorable.
80. Slow dance with someone you love - Just because you haven't slow danced since your high school prom doesn't mean you shouldn't do it anymore. There's a romantic side in all of us. Embrace it. Need a music suggestion? Two words: Michael Buble.
81. Watch the top Netflix shows - There's too many to list, so I'll just give you a few: Breaking Bad, Narcos, and Master of None. "Netflix and chill" is a great experience, especially on rainy nights.
82. Write on Quora - A few months ago, I started writing on Quora. One of my first posts got 287 views. Yay! I kept writing anyway. Now I have 1.8 million views on my answers. Quora is such a great platform to practice your writing skills, to contribute back to the world and to learn from experts as well.
83. Help someone out without asking for anything in return - Studies show that people who participate in charity are happier. I included this point twice, I know. It's because giving back is one of the most important things we can do in life. If everyone was just a little bit more helpful to each other, how much better would the world be? A lot better.
84. Listen completely without judging - Sometimes people don't want your opinion at all. Sometimes they just want you to listen. To feel heard. Try it.
85. Forgive someone completely - Chances are that we've all been wronged by someone in the past. It's time to let it go. Forgive them completely. You only hurt yourself by holding onto the anger.
86. Be intensely curious for a moment - A study published in 1996 by Psychology and Aging included more than 1,000 elder adults that were between the ages of 60 to 86. They were carefully observed over a five-year period. Guess what they found? Those that were rated as being more curious at the beginning of the study were more likely to be alive at the end of the study. Curiosity helps you cultivate deeper relationships, explore new experiences and challenges you to grow personally.
87. Email one of your role models - How do you get their email, you ask? Simple. Just followfrom Tintup that shows how you can find an email address in minutes. #Genius
88. Be a good samaritan - See trash on the street? Pick it up and throw it in the garbage. See an ID on the street? Return it to its rightful owner. Do the right thing.
89. Do the "Do I really need this?" test - Every year, go through all the stuff in your house or apartment and ask yourself, "Do I really need this?" If you don't, donate it to a good cause so that someone can use it.
90. Take a bike ride across the Golden Gate Bridge - The views of the city are gorgeous, especially if you go up the hill on the left side of the bridge. Plus, you get a stellar workout.
91. Stop blaming others - It takes an incredible amount of energy to blame others. You get upset. Angry. Resentful. So here's an idea: take that energy and focus on improving yourself.
92. Act exactly as you feel - Not happy about something? Don't fake a smile. Just be completely authentic to how you feel. Live in the moment honestly.
93. Encounter failure - No one's perfect. Everyone fails at some point, whether it's small or big. When you first write, you're not a Pulitzer Prize writer. When you first shoot a basketball, you're not an NBA All-Star. When you first ride a bike, you're not ready for the Tour de France. The key is to keep pushing forward. #NeverGiveUp
94. Go to a wedding (or have your own) - Celebrating love is one of the most beautiful things in the world.
95. Be single for a period of time - Being single allows you to find who you really are. Your strengths, weaknesses, and insecurities. It gives you a chance to explore what you really want out of your life.
96. Love yourself first - Before you fall in love with someone else, remember to love yourself first.
97. Walk in the city with headphones or just take it all in - When I walk in San Francisco, I see so many people that are rushing to get to the next destination. Instead of doing that, try to walk at a normal pace. Maybe even slower than normal. Take the time to appreciate the sights and sounds of the city. If it's too noisy for you, you can listen to your favorite song by wearing some headphones. Try to appreciate the walk.
98. Pack light and travel to a foreign country - You don't need a huge gigantic suitcase to travel the world. You can fit two weeks of clothes in a carry-on. Keep it simple. Once you do that, pick a foreign country you've always wanted to go to. Traveling will give you a break from your fast-paced life and allow you focus fully on yourself. It'll give you a chance to connect with people from different cultures. It'll get you out of your comfort zone and test your social assumptions. It'll give you an excitement you've never felt before. 99. Eat a sandwich and enjoy a drink on the beaches of Barcelona - I did this a few months ago and I haven't forgotten that moment since. It reminded me to slow down in life. Enjoy the sun beating on your face. Enjoy the sand between your toes. Enjoy the moment.
