What is your advice for those who want to succeed? originally appeared on Quora: the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world.

Answer by Connie Chan, General Partner at Andreessen Horowitz, on Quora:

First, I would start with coming up with your own personal definition of success. I've seen too many people sacrifice their careers to achieve someone's definition of success only to be unsatisfied decades later with how they spent their time and energy. So the first step in my opinion, is to figure out what kind of life and world contribution you want to have and define success on your own terms.

Second, figure out how to improve your focus, since success rarely comes without sacrifice. This doesn't mean cutting out all of your hobbies or neglecting your friends and family, but it does mean taking inventory of your commitments and cutting out things when possible. Protect your time, it is your most valuable resource. I personally block many websites on my PC browser during the weekdays, delete apps that I find myself wasting too much time on, unplug the television when necessary, and most recently I turned my phone to black and white mode (inspired by a Justin Kan blog post). It is amazing how mobile shopping becomes quite the drag when your phone is black and white.

Third, push yourself to achieve. Self motivation is powerful. A great philosopher named Winnie the Pooh once said, "you're braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think."
