How do I convince people to work on my startup idea? originally appeared on Quora: the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world.

Always have your vision top of mind and don't ever stop selling it. No matter what your background is, CEO is a sales job, at least in part. A good CEO is truthful, authentic, and selling the vision in good times, and even more so in challenging ones. Fortunately for me, Likewise makes it pretty easy to recruit top talent - it's a consumer product in an exciting space that is changing everyday and ripe for disruption. The prospect of getting in on the ground floor of a project or idea that has the potential to become a household brand and even change the world is sexy.

However, that's not always the case. Before Likewise, I was the CEO of Market Leader for more than a decade. We built a great company and one that did great things for customers, but getting people excited about providing tools to real estate professionals so they can be more productive is a bit less sexy than building a great consumer product. But we sold the vision and we got people excited about helping the smallest of small businesses. We brought customers to the office to tell their stories -- how our products helped them get successful and pay for their kids' colleges, etc. To be a successful leader you need to take what you have and get great people fired up about it. If you can do that, you can accomplish just about anything.
