What was it like to be the youngest employee at Google? originally appeared on Quora: the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world.
As a fresh-faced 19-year-old, I was one of the youngest employees on staff, but nobody held my hand. I quickly discovered that the Google lifestyle meant more than just free gourmet meals, as projects piled up around me. As a tech entrepreneur today, that sink-or-swim experience influences nearly every move I make.
I learned the importance of steering your own ship. If I wanted to get ahead I had to stand out - and that meant capitalizing on internal resources and meeting with people on interesting teams. I quickly learned the facets of the company in order to rise to the top.
I also learned the comfort breeds complacency. Google became successful by constantly pushing the limit and operating at an extreme velocity. If I wanted to succeed there, I had to keep growing and evolving by thinking like an entrepreneur. When you face major challenges, the team has to double down, invest aggressively and fight harder.
