1. The Meditation Equation

Over the last few years it has become clear to me the importance of meditation in being successful. Successful CEO's from Russell Simmons to Ariana Huffington are now touting the benefits of creating a quiet space where we can take some time out from all our DOING and just enjoy BEING. (The subject of taking time to think is so critical to success that I just finished a book on this topic...but more on that later.)
The reason meditation is so vital to success is because entrepreneurs are busy with to do list a mile long which pull us in so many directions. This makes it exceedingly difficult to stay focused on the task at hand. Sitting quietly and stilling our thoughts allows for our worries to be replaced by new insights. When thoughts of to-do list aren't running rampant in our brains, ideas about how to best accomplish task on that list are more likely to come up. This is why taking time out to meditate allows for a clearer focus that makes us much more efficient when we have to get back to the business of DOING.

2. Gratitude's Enriching Attitude

Gratitude is another under-discussed aspect of the entrepreneurial life. Yet it's so important to prosperity because when we center our thoughts on what is going right, we ensure that we stay on the path of positive results. Gratitude is the tool that allows for this type of focus. One 2012 study by Bersin & Associates revealed that businesses excelling at employee recognition are 12 times more likely to achieve "strong business results."
It's important to remember to start the gratitude process with ourselves because this sets in motion a perspective shift. Many people are surprised to experience a commonly reported reaction to self-gratitude that starts this shift in motion: our eyes get watery, we develop a sudden catch in our throat, and an expansive feeling starts to develops in our chest after giving ourselves just one minor compliment. This is because we're now focused on an aspect of our life that is right where we want it to be.
This in turn allows us to follow the chain of events that led us to our blessing. When doing this we remember the other folks involved in helping us along the way. We can then provide genuine thanks to them for their efforts, without any forced phoniness that people can see right through. According to the Bersin & Associates study, some of the best ways to show gratitude to employees are through small group or one-on-one recognition sessions, and by using technology to make your appreciation more accessible to them.
